Quelab is a 100% volunteer organization, and our greatest strength is community members like you! Our community is made of makers and tinkerers, inventors and entreprenuers, geeks and nerds, experts and newbies, teachers and students, and everyone in between. And without the sustaining membership of these people, we would be unable to keep the doors open and the lights on. Our memberships are $40/month, and after you complete the new member orientation, you will get all of the following perks:
- 24/7 access to the space
- Access to members-only tools
- Project & Parts storage in our storage room
- Temporary large project storage
- Access to special members-only events
- A free Quelab T-Shirt!
You can add an Associate Membership for any other person at your residence (ages 13+) for only $20/month each; however for safety purposes, we ask that everyone under the age of 18 has a legal guardian present.
If you’re ready to join, sign up for orientation here. If you’ve still got questions, keep reading (or email our membership officer)!
Frequently Asked Questions
Our members have donated, found, or lent us a number of really useful tools. We’ve got a fully-stocked electronics lab, a fiber-arts and costuming area, a metal and wood shop with numerous heavy power tools, our public access 3D Printer and CNC Machine, plus a wide selection of hand-tools. Check the wiki for an ever-changing list.
Unfortunately, we’re neither a TechShop, nor a FabLab, nor a Tool Rental company. We’re all volunteers and we’re only open to the public certain nights. The most dangerous of the tools (Power Saws, Laser Cutter, Lathes, and the like) are restricted to trained members, so they’re off limits even on public nights.
The Laser Cutter is an awesome and amazing tool, but it is also a finicky beast that you have to learn how to use properly. Only members are eligible to take the laser-cutter orientation (which is separate from the workshop orientation). It is one of our most popular tools, and scheduling time on the laser as well as getting trained up on the laser requires contacting one of our Laser Trainers.
If you don’t have any projects to work on right now, or if you don’t know an microcontroller from a lawn sprinkler, that’s just fine. We’re a community of people interested in learning; If we don’t have the answers, we either know where to look or are interested in learning about it ourselves. Come join us at our public open nights on Sundays and Tuesdays from 7-10pm (Reservations not required). Also, watch for classes and events announced on our blog or Eventbrite.
We understand that sometime $40/month is a hardship, so we have a need-based plan for folks who want to make things, but where the standard membership fee is too much. Email the membership officer at registrar AT quelab DOT net for more information.
