A few years back, I posted a link to the Tesla Science Center‘s fundraiser campaign to purchase the grounds of the Nikola Tesla’s Wardenclyffe laboratory to preserve it and turn it into a museum. A campaign which worked, and a campaign which attracted the attention of Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk.

Well, things have been going swimmingly for the TSC folks, and they got the land, they’ve cleaned it up, and they’ve started the renovations. Now they’re raising money by selling memorial bricks for the visitor’s center and we have our opportunity to get our name engraved in history.

Quelab member Jeremy has started raising money internally to place OUR name on one of those bricks. If you’re interested in contributing, check out the thread on our members email list, or see him at the potluck this coming Sunday. If we raise enough money for us, we can send that money on to the TSC.

Also, Tesla for those who don’t know him (tw:language)

Greetings! The next Quelab general meeting is scheduled for Sunday 7 September 2014 at 4:30 PM.

One of the most important changes we are looking at implementing is the new door code policy. We will be changing the door code at the meeting, and only members in good standing (i.e. paid dues in the last 15 days, or are on auto-payment) will be given the new code. Membership fees come due on the first of the month, and are in arrears by the 15th. Folks who are not paid up by the meeting will have to come to a Hack Night or make an appointment to regain their 24-hour access.

EDIT: Updated to announce door code changes.

Last night’s hacknight had a special visitor: Sonny Jeon, the developer behind grbl – “a free, open source, high performance software for controlling the motion of machines that make things and will run on a straight Arduino.”  It is loaded on the Arduino running our Shapeoko 2 Mill (thanks, #INVENTABLES!) as well as many many more machines worldwide.

He emailed us, then came in to donate some CNC equipment & brewing supplies. Sonny had great discussions with Aaron & Morgan & others, and he even updated the Arduino running our Shapeoko to the latest version of grbl (freshly released in the last day or two)!   This new version is much faster, and we can already see the difference in movement of each axis.

…Sorry, Walter, but none of us thought to get a picture, durn burn it! Instead, please accept this sketch from his blog (a cropped version is also on his github page):

Thanks to whomever fixed the donated Roller Mill!
It is now available for use.

Please try to squish only metals softer than steel.

Plot of calibrated delta bedI finally documented my analysis scripts to make calibrating a Delta 3D printer a bit more straightforward.
Not totally automated, but getting there.
With some of the new Marlin updates that allow setting some of these parameters in EEPROM instead of compiling them in,
this could be part of an automated procedure.
