Here is the opening message

Hey guys,

Who would be the best contact or maybe a general inquiry to Quelab members for an LED prop? I'm looking for means to fabricate a bunch of props for the Maize Maze using LEDs. Here's the main ones:

1) LED glowing tube with unknown liquid
I am thinking of a 3-5" clear tube that is caped and filled with some form of jelly or liquid. Within that possibly with an inner set tube would be filled with enough colored LEDs to light the tube and hopefully 1-2 day of battery power. Not required but would be interesting to pulse. We're very much looking for toxic chemical-type vibe. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle style. Would need dozens of these.

2) LED glowing puddle with unknown liquid
Similar as above imagining that what was in that container got spilled into a glowing puddle on the ground. We thought about plexiglass with LED lights below and shallow pool of jelly to simulate it's deeper.

3) Motion activation audio devices

I can't actually figure out an inexpensive way to create this but part of the plot line of the interactive experience would be if the glow tubes could activate at a particular location. I'm not sure of a way to activate based on a proximity of a particular location. I think we could work around that need.

All this would be for the halloween weekend. We're working on an interactive theatrical experience inside the corn maze. The short of it is mutant frogs from chemical spill. It will have a slight educational component but mostly theatrical. The other props will be very Jurassic Park and visitors will be trying to figure out what is happening, unknowingly the actors will guide visitors to transport these mysterious containers which they later find out is causing the problems. We hope to also develop human-size frog costumes for the halloween scare factor once they do realize they will essentially be chased out of the maze.

I'm currently looking to see if this can be paid through by sponsors or possibly looking at a partnership with a high school film school who could use same props with their projects. Another idea could possibly be a partnership with Quelab so the event could also become a fundraising and promotional opportunity for the lab. The halloween weekend sees about 75% of the overall attendance. Halloween weekend falls on a Wed. this year so I was looking for something more unique to launch on the weekend before but also spread the word to get a draw on Halloween. I'd have to find out more specifics of course but could try and see if there's a way to share in the revenue. We've previously done this with schools where they get a % of visitors that come out.

And my reply,
-=-=-=-=-
Just off the top of my head this sounds like an easy project if we could get a few people on it.

the tubes, Id almost suggest something bigger, (think florescent lightbulb protector sleeves) they could be bottom end lighted with led's (hotglue or silicone caulking can keep them from getting wet) and battery operating them for a few days(probably all month) would work fine with C or D cell packs) even better if we can get folks to turn them off at the end of the night. but smaller tubing im sure could be found (even flexible tube)

non-toxic (toxic looking water) can be made very easy by cracking open a few dollar store highlighters and dumping the cartridges in water. (can even be made glow neon like by blue or purple led's)

we have at least 5 little sound recorder's there at the lab from last years haunted lab. they are not very noisy, they require a momentary button press so anything that closes the circuit for a moment would work, be it a button, or a gate or a pressure pad, or motion detecting,

motion detecting is not hard. cheap PIR motion detectors are on DX for about $3 each (warning they take about a month to ship things!!! but shipping is free) https://www.dealextreme.com/p/ir-infrared-motion-detection-sensor-module-dc-5v-20v-139624?item=4

not too sure on the puddle, indeed plexi, over a plastic lined pit would probably work, may need support. and could easily be the most expensive part

That's just the off the top of my head part, it would be great to get someone else atleast buy the parts. or compensation based on attendance percentages or something. We do have NonProfit status, but the Space fed will take 10% of any donations over $200 so one must plan with that extra margin.

Yeah, lots of this sound pretty easy: making the liquid for tubes/glowing puddles is as easy as finding a properly colored highlighter. Some colors glow really brightly under blacklights, dunno if power would be an issue there though. Motion detecting is easy, too.

We can probably do this relatively cheaply, but the more we get in terms of sponsorship, the more awesome we can make it. Agreed with Adric that we've got to keep the extra margin in mind for the Space Fed.
