I've started the planning on yet another project for the space. This one is an RFID 'welcome box' which will do something interesting to welcome a card-carrying member back to the space.

This is somewhat based on the gatekeeper machine at Noisebridge which plays a music clip on the intercom speaker when someone buzzes through the door using a 'general access' code. I will be prototyping the box using the Adafruit NFC shield for Arduino and will be looking into either a Wave-shield or an Ethernet-shield to facilitate the 'Welcome Action'.

Suggestions welcome!

well to get you started. we do have atleast one or two of these http://www.parallax.com/tabid/768/ProductID/114/Default.aspx they interface very nicely to arduino.

ive also got about a dozen keychain fobs and 3 or 4 credit card rfid cards. for your prototyping pleasure,

and i have a stand alone, rfid + keypad access control box (you can see in the following photos and video) https://secure.flickr.com/search/?w=58068110@N00&q=rfid that are all available for either prototyping/making this. or for Idora ideas on automating door security. (or combine the 2 ideas)

since it may have proprietary lab access details, the other thread is in the member only section of the forums.

Also sorta relevant, here is a nice design (we could use the front window similarly)

Shiny! Thanks Adric! (randomly, the guy who designed the Parallax unit will be at ABQMMF)

So far I've been thinking about having the box read a random line out of a fortune file every time you tag in, so I've been looking for TTS shields for Arduino. So far I found this https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10661 at Sparkfun.

I may have gone overboard in getting Adafruit's RFID prototyping shield https://www.adafruit.com/products/789 but we'll see when the package comes in.

yah the adafruit is likely overkill, but might be fun to have to play with nfc when a few ofus have phones or tags with the stuff.

So you mentioned a voice shield. I really hope it can be made to sound like Joshua from "WarGames"!

So while dinking around the Sparkfun site, I came across this video on their YouTube channel.

If only we didn't have to go through four keyed units on three doors! We could cut the iron key out and go RFID...
