We are looking into mounting my old EEE-pc with a cracked screen to a roomba. I'm going to try to archive resources and progress here

Parts we have on hand for this project,
3 maybe 4 bad battery packs (can be combined to build one or two good ones)
3 Roombas, 2 discovery models(one may have a bad wheel motor or sensors), one older.
1 irobot usb interface cable
1 eeepc laptop
3 or 4 invisible wall units
2 chargers
1 charging docking bay

I started collecting roomba resources at /data/roomba on the middle-room computer (currently k9). Feel free to alter privileges as necessary to write/update certain files. We can make a roomba group if necessary, but most of us interested in this have admin privileges anyway.

The older roomba appears to be a first generation, without the open interface. I think they are often hacked, but generally by replacing their brain with an Arduino, or similar. The Discovery models are 3rd generation and have the ROI

Lets work with the two discoveries we have, Im thinking the next step is to get the netbook up and loaded with something with wifiand ssh (and perhaps apache)

poke the battery packs, until we have something we can recharge onboard.

then perhaps lighten the load and leave more upgrade options by removing the vac systems.

Here's a Python interface for the Roomba: http://code.google.com/p/pyrobot/

I also have one of the Green Sticks, which is nothing more than an AVR board with some iRobot applicable stuff -- including 4 hackable DB9's -- we could probably get the Arduino libraries running on it if we were really clever -- Firmata, anyone?

Python may be good, ultimately, whatever we setup should go through a web interface on the eeepc strapped/wired to the roomba. that way one can remotely drive it, and see through the webcam. perhaps VOIP through the speakers/microphone.

I'd like to set up a skype account for the roving robot. I think I'll need an e-mail address. Which one should I use? Do we have some sort of lab gmail address I can use? Should we create a new address for the robot?

we could use the gmail account que.board but that forwards to board@

so depending on how spammed it gets that may be annoying, gmail supports all sorts of special forward/filter rules, so it might work

or we could setup a @quelab.net mail alias to deliver anywhere we need it to go.
