Discover STEM Day at the National Museum of Nuclear Science and Industry this Saturday

Quelab is delighted to announce we will be participating in Discover STEM day at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History Saturday! Come on down and see us February 7, from 10 am to 3 pm. Participation fees for the event are included in museum admission, and the museum itself is open from 9 am to 5 pm.

We will be bringing a 3-D printer, one of our members is bringing a 3-D scanner app they have created, and there will have some nifty things made on our laser cutter as well. We will plenty of other fun stuff and a few surprises too!

Last time I visited the museum I was really impressed by the breadth of their exhibits. I know this is STEM day, but if you have someone in your group who prefers history they will have plenty to keep them busy!

Find out more on the about STEM day on the museum website here.

ABQ Comic Expo 2013

Sooner than it feels possible, but ABQ Comic Expo is coming! At the ABQ Convention Center June 21-23, Quelab has been assigned Booth #521 with the Star Wars Cosplayers behind us. We’ve got a 10×20 booth, which means we have twenty feet of aisle-space to show off the cool things which Quelab members have made, are making, and plan to make.

This is our opportunity to show off why Albuquerque has a hackerspace, and what a hackerspace can do for the ACE attendees. Now, this isn’t the Artemis booth, this is the “come see the cool stuff we do” and ‘drop in hackerspace’ booth. (Hopefully, this year, “cool things” doesn’t include the air-conditioner).

We need to be able to find the same amount of cool things to show off to the public, and we need LOTS more swag to both sell and give away. Learning from last year, we need plenty of Cheap Freebies (flyers, cards, etc) to give away, and not so much swag, unless it’s Maker Faire pins or soldering kits (with a free, on the spot class). We also need to have people sign up to man the booth, as well as setup on Friday Afternoon and teardown on Sunday Evening.

So who has a thing to show off?
And stay tuned for a big announcement regarding the Artemis project…

Packet Party Reminder!

Don’t forget, next week is our regularly-scheduled Network Security themed “Packet Party”, 14 March 2013 at 1930. Join Quelab Member Jeremy Hoel on the second Thursday of every month.
This is a rather free-form, open-format meeting; there aren’t any official materials we will be working from, and there is no set curriculum to be followed. Our last Packet Party had people learning how to unwrap a network packet using PCAP, and read the contents (sniffing for login credentials). Jeremy would be able to provide information about network monitoring, forensics, security IDs, you name it.

New Event! Packet Party

Join Quelab Member Jeremy Hoel who will be curating our monthly “Packet Party”, the second Thursday of the month. Our next Packet Party will be a week early on 7 February at 19:30, and we would love everyone to come out and learn about network security.

This is a rather free-form, open-format meeting; there aren’t any official materials we will be working from, and there is no set curriculum to be followed. Our last Packet Party had people learning how to unwrap a network packet using PCAP, and read the contents (sniffing for login credentials). Jeremy has been working as a government contractor over the past 13 years, moving from generic systems administration to mail/*nix systems, to network management/security, to his current job on a incident response team. He has been playing with network tools (open source and otherwise) for most of the past 10 years. He is currently managing 50+ snort IDSs across the country, doing analysis, maintenance and performance tuning and upgrades. He participated in a group like this for over a year in Virginia, and had been leading the group for the past few months and it’s always good to see what new things are learned when people talk about what they do. Jeremy currently holds CISSP, SANS GSEC (Gold) and GCIA along with CompTIA’s ASP, Sec+ and MS MCSA+
